Artist Statement

Making art is a contemplative and restorative process for me inspired by the many forms of connection in my life. I dwell in moments past and reflect on my relationships with others in order to bring experiences closer to the forefront of my thoughts. This provokes discovery, and allows for my gratitude and celebration of the positivity that results from vulnerability and human connection. I am especially drawn to freeform, monotype printmaking for the metaphor of connection inherent in the medium. This metaphor is indicated through the medium’s invitation to incorporate patterns and textures found in everyday objects such as shower loofahs, packaging materials, and mesh bags that once held onions from the supermarket. Furthermore, connection is indicated through printmaking techniques such as ghost printing, offset printing, and the use of a matrix. In combining these techniques with freehand drawing and collage practices, I am able to explore how the creation of one image is formally attached to and reliant on another. The result of this has been that I am constantly surprised, challenged, and ultimately rewarded as I discover new combinations. Working this way in the studio piques my attention and curiosity for how I engage with the world outside of the studio. I choose to cultivate and cherish interconnectedness in life for the capacities of happiness, healing, and resurgences of hope it has contributed to mine. I am driven by the concept of interconnectedness as I make art, all the while striving to understand and achieve the formal possibilities that may symbolize it in the visual realm.
